The Road To Dragon Kenpo And Butokutsuru Ryu Kenpojutsu

My first introduction to the martial arts was through the movies and Grandmaster Bruce Lee Through watching his moves in action on the silver screen gave me my start in what would be a long road to becoming a martial artist In the late 1970's I met a young Sifu named Roger Clinard/AKA Jimmy Bird.

He was my first teacher in the basics of Five Animal Kung Fu I trained personally with him until I enlisted into the U. S. Army in September Of 1978 After my initial traning I joined the local Chinese Kempo School on base! The first class proved to be a disaster and embaressment to the martial arts I was asked as a demonstrator to hold the arm of a female classmate for the sensei.

My ego inflated to the point that I could not release my grip on the female student I had started to hurt her and just could not let go! The Sensei was chinese and had to hit my arm repeatedly until he was about to break it before I let go! I was humiliated and torn I left the class never to return Not understanding that this turning point in my martial studies would be my first introduction into the knowledge of the Martial Way Of Learning.

I saw a picture of Grandmaster Ed Parker on the cover of Black Belt Magazine, with him posing in a right side kick stance He looked as though he saw through the page as his eyes produced a stare from the abyss That stance was the first martial arts stance that I practiced months and months until I had mastered the stance.

Then I began to walk like a martial oriental, practicing rikshaw walking Then the basic punches and kicks of karate developed After three more years of independent practice of the military combative arts I was ready to learn true martial arts! I resumed training in basic kung fu under Sifu Bird in 1982 after my army hitch was up! I trained with Sifu Bird on and off until 1985 I then joined the U S Marine Corps and after training I joined the local base karate class.

I was to find out that this class was that of the Matsumura Orthodox of Grandmaster Hohan Soken; sole heir to the Okinawan Hakutsuru White Crane Shorin-ryu System of Nabe Matsumura! The schools head master then was Seiki Arakaki, with Grandmaster Fusei Kise as the next in command! Shorin-Ryu was great for me, through it's teachings of the traditional knowledge of the martial way of learning It provided me with knowledge of kung fu that I never would have gained, for it was from the okinawan perspective! I trained in shorin ryu for eighteen months and was a green belt when I left the school! This was in 1987 From 1987 until the present I train on and off with Sifu Bird The nearest shorin ryu school was in the next state; so I countiued independently until my martial research lead me to the practice of Qi Gong in 1997.

Sifu Bird had introduced me to qi gong and some bagua moves prior, but I was not ready at that time to understand the complexities of this new way of martial learning! From 1997 until 2000 I trained independantly in shorin ryu, qi gongfu and kung fu karate In March of 1999 I began training in Dragon Kenpo under Master Ed Hutchison Finally, the piecies of the martial way was coming together.

Another type of motion was being introduced and kenpo was it; I was not going to blow this one so after years of study, practice, research and the understanding of humility in the martial way of learning, I was ready to become a true martial artist. 2000 I recieved my Shodan in Dragon Kenpo In this same year the Dragon Kenpo Karate Consortium was Founded! In november of 2000 the Dragon Kenpo Karate Academy doors closed Thus, the International Dragon Kenpo Association was formed I'am currently Co-Founder and Secretary of the IDKA Board Of Directors.

In May 2001 I received my 4th Dan / Yondan in Kenpo Karate and recognized as Founder of Butokutsuru Ryu Kenpojutsu by the Valadez Kenpo Association. On July 1st, 2002 Shihan Reginald Hoover was recognized as Yodan /4th Degree Black Belt Instructor of "Kenpojutsu" / Kenpojujitsu by the American Federation Of Jujitsu. In September 2002 I Received My 5th Dan / Godan In Kenpo Karate And Butokutsuru Ryu Kenpojutsu Was Sanctioned By The Eagle Tiger Federation Sokeship Council Of Grandmasters, Which Confered Upon Myself The Shodai Soke, (1st Generation Head Master) And Title Doctor Of Budo. On October 5th 2002, The Eagle Tiger Federation (ETF) Sokeship Council Of Grandmasters Sanctioned And Recognized Shihan Reginald Hoover As 10th Degree Black Belt / Judan / Grandmaster Of Butokutsuru Ryu Kenpojutsu.

In this same month Shihan Reginald Hoover was Sanctioned and Recoginzed as 10th Degree Black Belt, Soke , Grandmaster of Butokutsuru Ryu Kenpojutsu by Martial Arts Association-International Board Of Grandmasters. On October 19th 2002 Shihan Reginald Hoover was Sanctioned and Recognized as 10th Degree Black Belt, Soke, Grandmaster of Butokutsuru Ryu Kenpojutsu by the World Street Combat Systems Organization (WSCSO) Sokeship Board Of Grandmasters. In late November 2002, Shihan Reginald Hoover was Sanctioned and Recognized as 10th Degree Black Belt, Soke Shodai, Grandmaster by the World Nibuikai Budo Federation (WNBF) and World Martial Arts Masters Society (WMAMS) Sokeship Board Of Grandmasters. I'am also a member of the Brotherhood Of Martial Artists / American Federation Of Jujitsu / Combat Martial Arts Practitioners Association / International Sung Ja Do Association / Valadez Kenpo Association / International Combat Martial Arts Union Association And ICMAUA International Combat Kenpo Union, International Combat Karate Jitsu Union, International Combat Martial Arts Founders Union, And International Combat Martial Arts Soke Union.

The Dragon Kenpo Karate Consortium And It's Black Dragon Clandestine Combatives Institute Is A Proud Member Collaborative Of The ICMAUA International Combat Street Fighting Union, International Combat Ch'uan Fa Union, International Okinawan Martial Arts Union, International Combat Military Martial Arts Union, International Combat Martial Arts Organizations Union, And International Combat Martial Arts Soke Union From 1977 to 2004; 27yrs of martial learning! It "Is" well worth it! Academically, Soke Hoover has attended Rutledge College, City Colleges Of Chicago, Cameron University And N C A&T State University In May 2003 Grandmaster Reginald Hoover was appointed to the Puerto-Rico International Combat Aikido & Jujitsu Federation Board Of Directors.

Grandmaster Hoover was inducted October 2003 into the World Union Of Sokes Hall Of Fame as "Master Of The Year, Karate":
